NFID Co-SPONSORS VIDEOCONFERENCE ON ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE

The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) has co-sponsored, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Public Health Training Network, an important satellite videoconference called, "Antimicrobial Use and Resistance: Solutions to the Problem."

This 2 1/2-hour broadcast was aired in August, and provided physicians, nurses, infection control professionals, pharmacists, laboratorians, hospital administrators, and others with an overview of the increasing problem of use and the emergence of antimicrobial resistant pathogens. Participants learned a variety of strategies to improve antimicrobial use and to prevent and control the spread of antimicrobial resistant pathogens.

William R. Jarvis, MD, chief, Investigation and Prevention Branch, Hospital Infections Program, National Center for Infectious Diseases, CDC; John M. Boyce, MD, hospital epidemiologist, Miriam Hospital, and professor of medicine, Brown University School of Medicine; John E. McGowan, Jr., MD, professor of epidemiology and medicine, Emory University, and director, clinical microbiology, Grady Memorial Hospital; and Ava D. Lancaster, RN, BSN, CIC, director of infection control, St. Thomas Hospital, served as speakers during the event.

Viewed by more than 50,000 individuals in the United States and abroad, the program received excellent feedback from the participants. Due to the overwhelming positive response, NFID also is offering this program on videotape for $30 on VHS format.

Another videotaped videoconference called, "Putting the Pieces Together: Managing Occupational Exposures to HIV" that NFID also co-sponsored with the CDC in January 1998 is available for $30. This 2á-hour program provides practical guidelines for managing occupational HIV exposure. Both videos include the cost of shipping and handling.
