O-SPONSORS VIDEOCONFERENCE ON HIV EXPOSURE IN THE WORKPLACEThe National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) is once again getting the word out about HIV exposure in the workplace. This past January, NFID, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Public Health Training Network co-sponsored a videoconference entitled, "Putting the Pieces Together: Managing Occupational Exposures to HIV." Viewed by more than 34,000 individuals in the United States and Canada, the program received excellent feedback from the participants. Due to the overwhelming positive response, NFID also is offering this program on videotape.
The 2 1/2-hour broadcast provided physicians, nurses, occupational health professionals, hospital administrators, infection control providers, and many others with practical guidelines for managing occupational HIV exposure. Viewers learned how to incorporate public health service recommendations into their own policies and procedures on managing HIV exposure. Topics included potential occupational risk factors, steps to take if an exposure occurs, available treatments for the exposure, safety and legal issues, and guidelines for designing proper programs to manage HIV exposure.
Speakers included Denise M. Cardo, MD, acting chief, HIV Infections Branch, CDC; Julie L. Gerberding, MD, MPH, director of the EPI Center, San Francisco General Hospital; Vikas Kapil, DO, MPH, CEO and medical director, Premier Mercy Corporation, Health Services and associate professor of occupational and environmental health, University of Cincinnati School of Medicine; Daniel Riedford, JD, Office of General Council, CDC; Michael S. Saag, MD, professor of medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham; and Charles Schable, MS, chief, Serology Section, CDC.
NFID's sponsorship was underwritten by unrestricted educational grants from Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Glaxo Wellcome Inc., Merck & Co., Inc., and Pharmacia & Upjohn, Inc.
