NFID NAMES '99's TOP 10 INFECTIOUS DISEASES

The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) recently announced the top 10 infectious diseases on which the foundation will concentrate its efforts in 1999. At its May meeting, the NFID Board of Directors ranked these diseases as follows:

  1. Antimicrobial Resistance and Emerging Infections
  2. HIV and AIDS
  3. Vaccine Preventable Diseases
  4. Hospital-Acquired and Opportunistic Infections
  5. Gastrointestinal, Diarrheal, and Foodborne Diseases
  6. Viral Hepatitis
  7. Tuberculosis
  8. Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  9. Zoonotic Diseases
  10. Tropical Infectious Diseases

NFID will focus its attention on these diseases by promoting public and professional educational events, instituting prevention campaigns, and fostering research.
