Message from Headquarters: NFID Makes a Difference

As 2016 comes to an end and 2017 is about to begin, what a great opportunity to reflect on the many successes NFID experienced over the past year thanks to the generous support of all of our contributors. Your continued support is critical in helping NFID continue to deliver high quality programs.

In 2016, NFID provided education to more than 23,000 healthcare professionals through live and online programs on topics ranging from adult immunization awareness to Pseudomonas aeruginosarespiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in older adults, and influenza in college students, and in adults age 65 and older

On the public outreach front, we developed four new public service announcements which have received more than 10,000 views to date. And to promote the importance of annual influenza vaccination, we hosted the 20th Annual Influenza/Pneumococcal News Conference and worked with several new partners including the Atlanta Braves, Vaccinate Your Family, and Vote & Vax to develop new innovative public outreach programs.

During the annual NFID black-tie awards dinner in May, we recognized Robert E. Black, MD, MPH, Diane E. Griffin, MD, PhD, and Larry K. Pickering, MD for their significant and lasting contributions to public health. Mark your calendars for the 2017 Awards Dinner scheduled for May 18, 2017 in Bethesda, MD where we will honor Peter Piot, MD, PhD, Myron M. Levine, MD, and Thomas M. File, Jr., MD.

As 2016 ends, I encourage you to show your support through a year-end donation to help us reach our annual fundraising goal of $50,000. Your contribution will assist us in continuing to provide high quality, timely education to the public and healthcare professionals.

Your gift of any amount truly makes a difference. Visit
www.nfid.org/donate today to donate and show your commitment. As a 501(c)(3) organization, your donation to NFID is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Thank you for your continued support. I wish you and your families a healthy and happy holiday season!

Best regards,
Marla

National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) Blog Relay
To highlight the importance of annual flu vaccination, NFID sponsored a blog relay during 2016 NIVW, featuring daily guest posts by NFID leaders:
RSV: The Annual Epidemic You May Not Know About (But Should)

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is estimated to cause 177,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 deaths in adults 65 and older in the US every year, and yet it goes largely unrecognized. With new RSV-specific antivirals and vaccines in the research pipeline, we need to begin raising awareness of the burden of RSV among older adults.
Pneumococcal Disease: Are You Protected?

There’s a disease that kills up to 18,000 US adults age 65 years and older each year. It can cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections (sepsis), meningitis, and ear and sinus infections. As many as 900,000 US adults contract it each year — 400,000 of whom require hospitalization.
