Message from Headquarters

Along with planning summer vacations, NFID staff are actively preparing for a very busy fall season ahead, following an equally busy spring!

For those who were unable to attend, the stars of the infectious disease community joined NFID to celebrate three outstanding leaders for their extraordinary contributions to public health at the 2017 NFID Awards Dinner. Myron (Mike) M. Levine, MD was presented with the 2017 Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement, Peter Piot, MD, PhD received the 2017 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Humanitarian Award, and Thomas (Tom) M. File, Jr., MD received the John P. Utz Leadership Award. These heroes have saved countless lives through their collective work on infectious diseases. I encourage you to read more about the prestigious awardees and view video highlights of the evening in the 2017 Oscars of Infectious Diseases blog post.

In early June, I was also pleased to accept the inaugural National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO) UpShot Award for Excellence in Vaccine Communication on behalf of NFID medical director William Schaffner, MD. Congratulations to Dr. Schaffner on a well-deserved award and for consistently remaining the voice of reason in ongoing public debates regarding vaccine skepticism and promoting sound science on the importance and safety of vaccines!

For those planning to catch up on continuing education this summer, be sure to read the NFID blog post, Catching Up on Summer Reading, for suggested NFID resources to add to your summer reading list. And for those planners already thinking about fall training courses, be sure to mark your calendars for the redesigned Fall 2017 Clinical Vaccinology Course scheduled for November 3-4, 2017 in Bethesda, MD. Based upon feedback from previous attendees, the course has been updated with a new 2-day format that includes poster presentations and a special screening of the documentary, Hilleman–A Perilous Quest to Save the World's Children. Additional information including online registration and poster presentation abstract submittals will be available next month.

I wish you all a healthy and relaxing summer and look forward to seeing you at the 6th Annual Flu Awareness Night at Nationals Park and other NFID events this fall...

Best regards,

Marla

ICAMP is a multidisciplinary program designed to equip healthcare professionals to champion adult immunization practices that improve public health and the quality of care for the patients they serve. Visiwww.navp.org/training-for-champions for additional information. ICAMP is developed by The Gerontological Society of America and supported in part by Pfizer and Merck.

National Survey on Adolescent Health
The Unity Consortium recently released results from a national survey of parents of teens, teens, and healthcare providers that revealed some major areas for improvement in preventive health communications to teens. While a vast majority of parents and teens believe it is important for all teens to be vaccinated, in reality teen vaccination rates are far lower than where they should be according to both Healthy People 2020 goals and the Unity Vision of 90% coverage for all ACIP-recommended adolescent vaccines. Learn about the survey results and what you can do to improve teen vaccination rates at: www.unity4teenvax.org/unity-projects/.
