Research

Scientists are actively looking for new drugs to prevent or to treat influenza, and for ways to make better vaccines that might offer higher levels of protection. One new type of vaccine being investigated consists of a small part of the influenza virus genetic code. This genetic code is inserted into a few cells of the body by an injection or other means. The cells then make small amounts of only a part of the virus, which in turn stimulates high levels of protective antibody.

Laboratory research on new vaccines

New methods for administering vaccines such as by nasal spray or orally are also being investigated. Such vaccines, which may contain live influenza virus rendered unable to cause influenza, may make future vaccinations easier and more acceptable to people who wish to avoid an injection.
